Microneedling (pricing below)
Q: How is microneedling different at Honolulu Dermatology?
A: Our board certified dermatologist performs an in-depth consultation prior to microneedling to determine how to best meet your goals. This consultation is included in the price of the microneedling and during this consultation the dermatologist can address any other medical or cosmetic dermatology issues. The dermatologist also performs the microneedling procedure itself ensuring the needles are set to the optimal depth and your skin is reacting appropriately. Lastly, our microneedling device has 36 needles (vs. 9-12 for most devices) and was specifically chosen because it has the most stringent infection control protocols in the industry.
Q: What is microneedling?
A: Microneedling, or percutaneous collagen induction therapy, is an in-office procedure used to stimulate the natural production of new collagen to improve the appearance of the skin. Microneedling can help with fine lines and wrinkles, skin tone and texture, pore size, acne scars and stretch marks. It can also allow skin care products to work more effectively.
Q: How does microneedling work?
A: A hand-held device is used to create millions of microscopic channels into the skin to stimulate the skin's natural wound healing response. This leads to the release of growth factors, which stimulate the formation of new collagen and elastin.
Q: Does microneedling hurt?
A: Microneedling is well tolerated by most patients. A topical numbing cream is applied for 20-30 minutes prior to the procedure, which allows for a relatively pain-free experience. The whole procedure takes less than an hour.
Q: What is the downtime and what side effects should I expect?
A: The total healing time depends on each patient and treatment. Most patients will look red, like a mild sunburn, for 24 to 48 hours and may feel dry for two to four days. Skin care will be discussed with you prior to the procedure. Sunscreen is recommended after microneedling.
Q: When will I see results?
A: Many patients notice results within a few days. However, the natural repair process of your skin continues to make new collagen over several weeks to months and you may continue to see improvement over six months.
Q: How many procedures are recommended?
A: The number of procedures recommended will depend upon your skin and treatment goals. Most patients receive a series of three to five procedures spaced about four weeks apart. Additional procedures may be performed every six to twelve months for maintenance.
Q: Is microneedling safe?
A: Microneedling is safe for all skin types. The depth is customized for your skin and treatment goals. Like all procedures, it is important to have microneedling performed by a qualified provider who follows strict infection-control guidelines.
Q: Is microneedling the same as my dermaroller device I use at home?
A: No. Dermarollers available for home use have a fixed number of short needles that may bend, break or rust, and may result in infection or scarring with reuse.
